Fashion design
My Mum started teaching me to sew when I was about 5 or 6 years old and I have always loved that it enables me to create clothing which is unique, rather than mass-market ready-to-wear. When I was looking for a career change after my time in the Royal Australian Navy, I studied fashion design at the TAFE NSW Sydney Institute, under the direction of the dynamic Nicholas Huxley. I did work experience with Akira Isogawa, Cue, Collette Dinnigan, Sydney Theatre Company wardrobe department and Tea Rose, a wonderful introduction to exquisite fabrics and couture techniques. I also got to work backstage at a couple of Australian Fashion Week parades which was a great insight to the madness of fashion modelling and marketing. In the end, I decided I didn't really like the industry so I eventually retrained in graphic design, but I still enjoy creating outfits.
